How Mountain Climbers Can Deal With Elbow Pain

Whether you’re an experienced climber or have only been doing it for a short while, you may run into trouble when pain develops in your elbows. It makes sense for this to happen if you fall or otherwise injure yourself. You can easily trace the pain back to a specific incident. What if the pain appears seemingly out of nowhere, though? Climbing could still be to blame. The only way to resolve this kind of thing is by determining its cause. If it’s climbing, there are things you can do to get relief and to keep it from happening again.

Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport. Whether you go rock climbing outdoors or stick with the climbing wall at the gym, you need to keep safety in mind at all times. Even if you are doing what it takes to stay safe, though, you could be making small mistakes that are causing elbow pain. It’s incredibly easy to do, and many climbers suffer from chronic elbow pain. That’s not to say that you have to grin and bear it. You should even be able to keep it from happening in the future. A few ways to do so include:

  • Do Stretches before Climbing

    If you’re the kind of person who tends to skip right past the warm-up/stretching phase, it’s time to rethink things. Your elbow pain could easily be caused by failing to stretch. By stretching the muscles, ligaments and tendons in your arms, you can keep them supple. They are then less likely to be injured while you’re actually climbing.

  • Get Medications for Inflammation

    After paying a visit to the doctor, you may learn that your pain is being caused by inflammation. That’s a very common source of elbow pain, and you might have to start taking medication to alleviate the inflammation. The only problem with this is that it’s not preventative, and it does nothing to actually cure the underlying problem. You’d probably rather not take medication for the rest of your life, so this may not be the best solution.

  • Take a Break

    Even if you have a lot of climbing activities lined up, you might have to put them on the back burner for a while. Sometimes, the only way to put an end to elbow pain and to get back in peak condition is by taking a break.
